Each Member Of Society Can Have Only A Small Fraction Of The Knowledge Possessed By All, And...each Is Therefore Ignorant Of Most Of The Facts On Which The Working Of Society Rests...civilization Rests On The Fact That We All Benefit From Knowledge Which We Do Not Possess. And One Of The Ways In Which Civilization Helps Us To Overcome That Limitation On The Extent Of Individual Knowledge Is By Conquering Intelligence, Not By The Acquisition Of More Knowledge, But By The Utilization Of Knowledge Which Is And Which Remains Widely Dispersed Among Individuals.

The Ultimate Decision About What Is Accepted As Right And Wrong Will Be Made Not By Individual Human Wisdom But By The Disappearance Of The Groups That Have Adhered To The "wrong" Beliefs.

Personally I Prefer A Liberal Dictator To Democratic Government Lacking Liberalism.

I Use Throughout The Term 'liberal' In The Original, Nineteenth-century Sense In Which It Is Still Current In Britain. In Current American Usage It Often Means Very Nearly The Opposite Of This. It Has Been Part Of The Camouflage Of Leftish Movements In This Country, Helped By Muddleheadedness Of Many Who Really Believe In Liberty, That 'liberal' Has Come To Mean The Advocacy Of Almost Every Kind Of Government Control.

Though Freedom And Wealth Are Both Good Things Which Most Of Us Desire And Though We Often Need Both To Obtain What We Wish, They Still Remain Different. Whether Or Not I Am My Own Master And Can Follow My Own Choice And Whether The Possibilities From Which I Must Choose Are Many Or Few Are Two Entirely Different Questions. The Courtier Living In The Lap Of Luxury But At The Beck And Call Of His Prince May Be Much Less Free Than A Poor Peasant Or Artisan, Less Able To Live His Own Life And To Choose His Own Opportunities For Usefulness.
